HER LIFE IN IMAGES

A young Bibi Mendro and Kartar Singh

Bibi Mendro as a teenager
Growing up, Mata Mendro never had access to education. However, her husband Sardar Kartar’s passion for learning made her realize the importance of attaining an education after her marriage. She credits Sardar Kartar for educating her and recalled how he used to come back home from night classes to teach her the coursework he had been taught.
As an enthusiastic and action-orientated young woman, she would often get frustrated with her husband for compelling her to focus on desk-bound school work. Eventually, Sardar Kartar, together with the Late Justice Choor Singh (a family friend) realized that she needed a concrete goal to work towards and promised to gift her with a scooter if she achieved success in her studies.
Mata Mendro’s ability to fluently speak in three languages as well as read in two is a testament to both her discipline and her husband’s dedication. Her endeavour indicates that anyone, even those not inclined to academic learning, can learn and excel if they apply themselves effectively by implementing relevant tools to achieve success.
Over the years, Mata Mendro supported her children during their tertiary education as well as encouraged her grandchildren and other community members to pursue their education despite their age or the background they came from, which helped many to attain success academically and in their careers.

In her younger days, it was a common sight to see Mata Mendro zooming around Fuyong Estate in Bukit Timah on her yellow scooter while helping out in the business or running errands for her family. As an equal partner in the family business, she was in charge of collecting rent from tenants as well as hosting "open houses" events. Many remember her tirelessly riding around on her ironic scooter while connecting home seekers with those who had houses available for sale or rent.

Mata Mendro was a passionate traveler. Her fondest childhood and early adulthood memories revolved around travelling on a bus to Malaysia with her friends and family. Over the years, she has traveled to various countries, visiting her many family members and friends and gathering memories that lasted a lifetime. She excitedly and fondly remembered :
travelling to various cities in Europe, USA, Canada, Australia & NZ to visit family members during festive periods or while her children were studying and working abroad during her mid-30s to her mid-80's.
She travelled extensively, which included:
*watching the royal wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana in the UK while having a picnic with friends on the grounds of the Palace;
*petting dolphins swim while on a boat in Melbourne;
